TimesUpKidz was created by Rain City Digital LLC, a Seattle-based business owned
and run by me - Justin Magaram. The software grew out of the frustrations my wife
and I experienced trying to ensure that our two boys (ages 7 and 9) did not spend
too much time in front of the computer.
I think video games and browsing the Internet are fine in moderation. We'd set the kitchen timer and give 5-minute warnings,
but inevitably
we'd have to nag our kids when their time was over. We'd have to deal with repetitive
pleas for "just a few more minutes." Our boys would fight about
who got to go first on the computer, or they’d complain if they thought their
brother got more time. It wasn't fun being the time cop. Occasionally I let
my kids use the computer for longer than their allotted time so I could have
more time to myself - only to feel guilty about it later. Something had to
change.

Before building TimesUpKidz I worked at Microsoft for 10 years as a designer and
manager on Windows, Microsoft Money, and other teams. While at Microsoft
I often felt pressure to add more features to help make the
products easier to sell, even though we knew that most of the features were never
used and added complexity.
My philosophy is that software should be intuitive and do a small number of things
really well. Less can be more. I only added features to TimesUpKidz that we - a
family with young kids - truly needed. I kept it simple.
We've been using TimesUpKidz in our home for over a year. It has eliminated
arguments between my kids about sharing the computer and made it so much easier
for my wife and I to consistently enforce reasonable time limits.
